Warning! Potential spoilers for Adamant Entertainment’s Rocket Raiders ahead:
The Rocket Raider
The Midnighters attend a show of Colonel Wilkins’ Flying Circus, including a performance by a daring Ukranian aerobat named Tatiana Romanov. The primary purpose for the show is an appearance by Skyler Hawkins and promotion of a new movie deal based on his daring exploits in the Great War. Hollywood film star and stuntman Buster Corrigan is in attendance and sweeps a star-struck Addison Hammon off her feet, much to the sheepish Skyler’s chagrin.
Later, police question Skyler about a robbery at the Hunter Museum of Natural History, where evidence and the report of an injured security guard points to someone dressed like him and using a jetpack! The Midnight Society investigates but, while they are doing so, the mysterious “Rocket Raider” breaks Charlie “Chopper” Murphy, a dangerous mobster, out of the South River State Pen. Max Cain contacts mobster Anthony Driogano to elicit his help, which Drigano agrees to, for a price. This gets the Midnighters advance warning about Chopper’s vendetta against the judge who sent him up the river.
The heroes are just in time to prevent a hit from taking out the judge, and they deal with Chopper (including Corrigan doing some daring driving and Lilith shooting out the other car’s tire). Max “persuades” Chopper to spill what he knows, leading our heroes to the Oasis Club and the man known as “the Sultan,” would-be crime lord of all Freedom City. His dining companion is Miss Tatiana Romanov. While Max Cain plays a high-stakes game of chess with the Sultan, Sklyer is able to find and rescue the imprisoned Dr. Yuri Kaminski, a former assistant of Dr. Hans Volkner, inventor of the rocket pack. Max wins, the game, the heroes take down the Sultan’s thugs, and they leave with Dr. Kaminski and Tatiana.
The doctor explains how he was able to re-create an early prototype of the rocket-pack. It’s not as efficient or safe as Skyler’s model, but it works. The Sultan secretly funded his work, then imprisoned Kaminski to convince Tatiana to test the rocket-pack and carry out various jobs for him. The Midnight Society sees to the pair’s safety and knows they will likely have to deal with the Sultan’s ambitions before too long.
