Went and saw King Kong last night with friends. Good movie, if you liked the original, you'll like this one, as Peter Jackson was clearly sticking close to his inspiration and he obviously loves the original film (which he said inspired him to want to make movies). Animation in film has just become amazing; the effects in Kong are as good as any, but they almost fade into the background just because they're so seamless and nothing we haven't really seen before (animated creatures, dinosaurs, scenic vistas, etc.).

Of course, since Jackson hasn't met an extended scene he didn't love, the movie is three hours long, but honestly it flies by and, by the time it comes to the climax, you'll be wondering where the time went. One can only wonder how long the extended DVD version will be (and you know there will be one).

I particularly loved the vision of 1930s New York. I just love the art-deco style and sensibilities of period: the buildings, the clothes, the cars, the streetcars, the brownstones, the whole schmear. It's the New York City I could have lived in, as opposed to modern NYC, which I suspect would drive me mad. Anyhow, it's a good movie, go see it. You'll be glad you did. As they say, "There is some wonder in the world still, and we can all share in it, for the price of a movie admission."
