Esteban Hunalpa joined the Mexican Army in hopes of a better life serving his country. He was among the token unit assigned to safeguard a shipment of ancient artifacts being moved from an archeological dig when followers of the Cult of the Smoking Mirror attacked. They left the soldiers for dead, stealing one of the artifacts to serve the cause of their dread master, Tezcatlipoca.

Mortally wounded, Esteban's gaze fell on a talisman to the warrior-god Camaxtli and he heard the god's voice: "You who are painted crimson with warrior's blood, speak my name and become my hand of justice!" With his last breath, Esteban called out to the sky, "CAMAXTLI!" and in a roar of fire and smoke was reforged, as Crimson, Son of Camaxtli. With the tremendous strength and mastery of fire bestowed upon him, Crimson defeated the Cult of the Smoking Mirror and has fought to keep Mexico safe from the ancient evils of his arch-foe Tezcatlipoca.
