Furance Work

So we're finally replacing our furance and, being us, have procrastinated long enough for it to happen in the midst of winter. They're working on things in the basement right now. Fortunately it's not as cold as it could be on a day in early January in NH, but it's still blood cold with no heat while the work on installing the new furnance. Our old one was the original furnance installed when they build our condo in the mid-80s, so it's like 20 years old, which is about 5 years past its operational life-span. It hasn't totally conked-out, but it could at any time, so better to take care of it before it becomes an emergency.

In spite of the inconvenience and expense, the good news is a new furnace will be more energy-efficient (far more, from what we've been told), meaning it'll burn cleaner and use less oil, which should hopefully lower our oil bill, which is a very good thing for this winter or rising oil prices. Still, I'd like them to be done so I can go about my life again.

I call my furnace "The Kraken." It squats in the basement, its tentacles reaching up into the house. It's older than I am. Those cast-iron heat exchanger rarely fail. However, it's horribly inefficient in comparison to the new models and so it must needs go away soon.

Ah, would that we could, but Christopher had to leave early for yoga class and has been at work all day. Fortunately, the new furnace is in and the heat's back on, thank gods.
