We took a break this weekend to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Overall, it’s a light fluff piece with a few decent performances wrapped up in a mediocre story with some moments that will bug comic book geeks and purists like myself.

Hugh Jackman at least showed up to work on this film, although he brings a bit of an odd leading-man quality to Wolverine. Sabertooth and Gambit were also handled well, but beyond that ... well, there are lot of pretty explosions and action scenes.

Overall, the key seems to be keeping your expectations fairly low. Fortunately, after X-Men 3, they couldn’t have been much lower, so I found the film modestly entertaining. The eye-candy of Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, and Taylor Kitsch (as Gambit) didn’t hurt, either.

I have higher hopes for Star Trek this week. We’ll see if that turns out to be a mistake or not.

Please tell if you've seen the new Star Trek. I'd like to hear if the new take on Trek is any good.

I just walk in to these movies nowadays going "This isn't based on the comic books I know and love."

I won't go into the things that, to me, really broke badly--for the sake of spoilerage. But I'm sure you were going "WTH?" too...

I've been waiting for a take on the film from someone who knows the comics far better then I ever could. I usually go to see these movies with my brother but couldn't wait for his work schedule and saw it opening night. You're response was about what I was expecting but I would have to agree that it was entertaining.
Personally, I've been hoping for the films to include Gambit after the first and was ecstatic when I learned he would be in this new one. I was a little disappointed that he didn't have the Cajun accent...

>>after X-Men 3, they couldn’t have been much lower<<

LOL, I feel the same way. I'll probably wait and pick this up on NetFlix.

I'm not too optimistic about the new Star Trek either. Those are some pretty big shoes they're trying to fill.

At the very least, Star Trek will have some decent eye candy.
