So the Reverend Dr. Evil (Rob Schwalb) is running an epic-level D&D 4e game for us at GenCon. Chris Pramas (busy company president that he is) out-sourced the creation of his 21st level character for the game. I didn’t have any trouble coming up with a character: I quickly settled on a kalashtar invoker, a champion of the Path of Light (which has gotten me into 4e Eberron in a big way). However, I could use some outside aid when it comes to setting my character up with the right gear. So I’m following Chris’ example and turning to the experts who read my blog on LiveJournal and Facebook.

The specifications are for level 22, 21, and 20 magic items and 225,000 gp worth of equipment. My character is a 21st level kalashtar invoker/lightwalker/demigod (1st level of his epic destiny) with the Covenant of Preservation build. Anything from the official Wizards D&D books is fair game. Help me bling him out with the right equipment list!

Wow. You leave a game alone for one edition, and they change all the names and add new-fangled whatsits. I tell ya.

Well, I've always been a big believer in having a balanced character, so at least one item should relate to healing and health, like a ring or necklace that includes regeneration among other abilities. The weapon of choice should naturally have attack/damage bonuses as high as you can get away with, as well as an ability that fills a hole the character doesn't have (like ambidexterity, perhaps) or beefs up a "weak" attribute. Some kind of bag of holding is practically a requirement, as is a class-related item. Other than that: defense, defense, defense! :)

I played D&D from the late 70s through the late 80s, and I haven't an f-ing clue what you are talking about. My how things have changed. Personally, I'd take the money and run. ;-P

Congratulations!

This marks the first time I've really, really wanted to learn about 4e. Not saying I'm running out to buy books, but man do I wish I had some constructive commentary.

Just no ioun stones, if they still exist, and no floaty shield, on the basis of aesthetics alone...

I understood everything you said, on the other hand.

You need a staff of distant shielding +5 as your 22nd level item. This works well with your Preservation covenant, and the daily (choose an ally, next enemy to attack the ally takes 20 radiant damage) is pretty cool.

For your 21st level, try a healer's sash. You get to load it up with charges by expending healing surges, and then spend a charge to give healing to an ally within 5 squares as an immediate reaction to them getting hurt, which doesn't keep you from doing your controller thing.

Finally, it would be helpful to have good armor, so try some Dawn Warrior armor (cloth, probably). It's +4 AC but it's also resist 10 acid, 10 cold, 10 fire, and 10 lightning. And it has a nice Daily power that deals a lot of radiant damage to an enemy that hits you, so win win.

Here's my thoughts:
Level 20: Spiritlink Chain Armor +4 - Gives you Necrotic Resistance and the Radiant resistance will stack nicely with your radiant renewal. As a Kalashtar you'll likely have the psychic resistance (through feats) down already. (Adventurer's Vault)

Level 21: Ioun Stone of Adaptation - Ok, so I was inspired by [livejournal.com profile] jrtheotter's comment. Still, its a spiffy little toy that gives you the general 'Life Support' style immunities and lets you ditch an ongoing damage effect once per encounter. And yes, it floats around your head). This one is found in the Manual of the planes.

Level 22: Rod of the Bloodthorn +5 - Hopefully your foes will be spending a lot of time bloodies so something that consistently hits them harder is a bonus.. plus who couldn't use an extra healing surge? (Adventurer's Vault)

If you use the Spiritlink Chain darktouch mentioned, you could take a cloak of survival +4 (PH), which would give resist fire & cold 10 (along with +4 to F/R/W defenses); that would be 105k from the 225k, leaving you enough for another 19th level item, and 15k for a bag of holding or handy haversack & similar minor (for a 21st level nascent demi-god) items, ritual mats, and walking around money.

Of course, I've played D&D 4e all of three times, so . . . :)
