Saw the Nicolas Cage remake of The Wicker Man last night with friends. The target audience is clearly folks who liked the original (starring Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee), but wished it had been set in America, and terrible. I can report success on both fronts.

Not in the slightest. I admit, I'm not a big fan of Cage in general (I think the last movie of his I enjoyed was Raising Arizona) but he seemed especially flat in this and the whole thing came off as pretty lame (to say nothing of the not-so-subtle subtext of "women and pagans are dangerous and scary").

I'm still trying to understand why you watched a Nicholas Cage film on purpose?

Aye, it was a truly bad remake. Makes me glad I still have a copy of the original version in my collection. After viewing the film in the theatre, I went back to regain the glory of the original and purge the Cage version.

We'd originally intended to have a viewing of the original, but it was nowhere to be found at local rental outlets, somebody brought the remake as Plan B, and I acceded because I hadn't seen the new one and was mildly curious (plus it was what we had). Watching it was an all-pagan audience was fun in a MST3K kind of way.

After sitting in disbelief through I, Robot, I took a personal vow never to knowingly support in any way another movie that's "based on the picture on the cover of a book by (insert author's name)". The so-called Wicker Man remake was an insult to Anthony Shaffer (who wrote both the novel and the script for the original screenplay).

I'll probably watch the thing eventually, but not until it comes out on non-PPV cable. I don't want to contribute one red cent to the fraudulent, misleading practice of applying a well known title to a plot that is, at best, only remotely related to the original story.

When searching for the original, be sure to look for what's now marketed as the "extended" version. They use the term "extended" in the sense of "not hacked up and spliced together in a contrived way to get Britt Ekland's titties into the first 20 minutes of the movie". The movie that's now marketed as the "original theatrical release" means the aforementioned hack job, not the original movie. And it's not nearly as good.

Believe it or not I am guilty of seeing the remake twice. First at the theater (fell asleep and missed the middle). Then when I saw the DVD advertising "Shocking alternate ending" I hoped. Unfortunately all they added was the broken leg scene. I did like Sister Summerisle's dress and makeup. I do have the vhs of the original. Favorite quote: "Yes, It's much to dangerous to jump over fire with clothes on." Christopher Lee is so cool. ;-)

I resent that needless slam on Britt Ekland's more than appealing titties. :)
