As Swords Against Khyber, my Savage Worlds Eberron game, begins drawing towards an ending, I’ve been thinking about my next game to run. Right now, I’m planning on Thrilling Tales of the Midnight Society, a Spirit of the Century game set in the “pulp” era of Freedom City in the 1930s.
The Freedom City part was initially kind of an afterthought, simply because I couldn’t decide where to set the game: New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, or somewhere else. Using a fictional city gives me more freedom (if you’ll excuse the pun), plus I know Freedom City pretty well and, like most comic book settings, the World of Freedom partakes of a lot of pulp ideas. It should be fun to “regress” the setting back to its pulp roots and play around with a 1930s view of some its elements like the hidden lands, secret societies, and whatnot.
The title comes from my initial idea to use the mysterious Midnight Society (Freedom City, page 60) as the basis for the group: a combination Cobalt Club and Century Club. Plus I plan to draw on the Thrilling Tales series from Adamant Entertainment pretty heavily for inspiration. Planning and character creation should begin in a few weeks and we’ll see how things go.
