Saw it tonight. It was... okay. Visually stunning architecture and design (thanks CGI!) but a bit thin on the story side. There’s a lot of “introduce new characters and have them tell you stuff” although it was nice to have a young female protagonist who’s smart, clever, and doing the rescuing rather than looking for rescue at every turn. It also seemed to end a bit abruptly. A decent film, but no Lord of the Rings (or even Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) by any means. If you like to see nice CGI on the big screen, then it’s worth a look, otherwise you can easily wait for the DVD.

Are you now a God-forsaken atheist for having seen the film, as the fundies are screaming will happen? Save the children from the horrible film that might give them an alternative viewpoint or *gasp* encourage them to think critically and for themselves!

I think I was considered God-forsaken long before I saw Golden Compass... ::evil grin::

The piece they did on NPR about the protests against the film was kind of interesting. Turns out the whole thing is rather Gnostic, although I'm sure that's a fine distinction lost on those protesting.

Yes, I listened to the NPR story too.

Distinctions/gradations/whatever are always lost on those who see the world in black and white.

From what I've heard, the last three chapters of the book were cut so that the movie ended early. So depending on how the movie does, they may be added to the next movie if there is one. Failing that, the scenes to the chapters were filmed, so they might make it on the DVD.
