In preparation for holiday gifts, gift certificates, and a general need for a fresh start to the New Year, it's time for me to begin weeding out the number of books in my office again.

If you're a serious RPG geek (and I am) you'll accumulate a substantial number of rulesbooks, sourcebook, and so forth. If you work in the industry, as I do, you'll also end up with a lot of freebies, trades, contributor copies, swag from conventions, and so forth. The two seven-foot bookshelves in my office are practically groaning from the weight of books on them, about 32 linear feet of shelf space packed with them.

A whole lot of these are books I'll never use, in many cases never even read. Some are for games I don't play any longer, others for games I've never played (and, in some cases, probably never will play). Some are for reference, either for work or current games I am playing. Others are largely deadweight, just taking up space. I need to consider which I'm moving into the basement for storage and which I just want to get rid of entirely.

Then, of course, comes the question of how to get rid of them. I'm constitutionally incapable of just throwing away a perfectly good book, even if I can't imagine having any use for it ever. I might see if a store like Pandemonium is interested in taking some used stuff off my hands, or maybe a dealer like Titan Games. It's too bloody much hassle putting things up on eBay to sell and then shipping them off one by one or in small bundles. More likely, the stuff I intend to get rid of will sit in the basement alongside the unused books I intend to keep, but at least they'll be out of my office.

Making room, of course, for some new books.

The two big bookshelves of pagan, occult, and metaphysical books on the other side of the room... well, they'll just have to wait their turn. Maybe a Beltane cleaning, or something.

I hear ya on the game book reduction effort. I auctioned off some of mine and I'm still gonna haul a huge bunch to DunDraCon to sell at the flea market.

Just throwing books away is, of course, never an option.
