The Midnighters investigate a young woman, Mildred Simms, who has gone missing after her boyfriend, two-bit hood Jackie Keegan, turns up dead in a Mob hit. They find her working as a showgirl at the Paradise Casino in Southside but, unfortunately, so do some Mob goons. Bullets fly (as do tables, and flaming desserts) and Buster Corrigan manages to get Mildred out the stage door into the alley, only to nearly get run-down by some other Mob hitters. The heroes are able to rescue Mildred and her new beau, Armand Bordeux, the manager of the Paradise.
Turns out the Mob hitters work for both of the major Families in Freedom City: the Drioganos and the Olivertis. This is unusual, as the two families have been rivals for years. Mildred reveals that Jackie thought Don Anthony “Big Tony” Driogano was acting strangely; not long thereafter, he turned up dead, and she fled. Interrogating captured mobsters from the Paradise reveals they got their orders from higher-up, and were expected to bring the girl to a Chinese place near the docks in Riverside called the Vermillion Crab. Following up on Keegan’s last known address and other sources of information doesn’t turn up much, although Max Caine finds out Tony Driogano (the Don’s son) appears out of the loop about the goings-on.
A confrontation with Driogano middle-man Ricky Malvo and some goons at the Vermillion Crab proves to be a dead-end, as Malvo is also getting his orders from his boss. The younger Tony Driogano shows up to tell Max and his friends to drop their investigation, at least for the moment, and allow him time to find out more before they set off a city-wide Mob war between the rival families. Ignoring Driogano, the Midnights retrieve Mildred Simms and her father from the hotel where they are staying and bring them to the Midnight Society Mansion on 52nd. Further questioning reveals Mildred doesn’t know anything more about Keegan’s activities or suspicions, but then St. George and Skyler smell gas....
From outside, a massive explosion rocks the mansion, blowing out windows and sending smoke and flames shooting into the night! Will Our Heroes survive?
