I have finally joined the Cult of the iPhone, as my big holiday gift from [livejournal.com profile] torcboy and to myself. My cell number hasn’t changed, for those who have it.

So, for those in the know, what iPhone apps are must-haves? (and, yes, [livejournal.com profile] righteousfist, I already have MachDice...)

Bwahaha! Welcome to the dark side!

I don't do phones, but the apps that see the most use on my iPod Touch are Spend, Facebook, GroceryiQ and Pandora. I adore GroceryiQ -- it's the first grocery list that has ever really worked for me -- and the Pandora holiday jazz channel has seen almost constant use at home since I downloaded it a few days ago.

I also spend a lot of time listening to podcasts on the way to and from work.

I hate you!!!

Seriously though, my partner and our housemate have iPhones, and it seems like they talk about them all day - how good they are, what new app they downloaded, did you kow this, did yo see that... sigh.

Great phones, great apps, too darned useful.

Galcon - Best game on the iphone. Get an RTS fix in under a minute.

If you read RSS feeds, and especially if you use netnewswire, grab the iphone client, then take the time to go to newsgator and sync up your accounts. I, for example, get about 25% of my feeds duplicated to my ipod, and if I read them in one place, they're updated in the other.

Twitteriffic makes twitter more awesome. It fits in the iphone ecosystem seamlessly.

Instapaper (http://www.instapaper.com/)'s reader is fantastic if you use the service (which is awesome) since it can slowly build up a nice library of readable stuff. Less critical for the iphone than it is for the ipod, but still very slick.

The new york times app on the iphone will make you wish more newspapers did the same thing.

One of Us, one of Us.

The dice roller I use is Dicenomicon, which is quite awesome (it's [livejournal.com profile] robin_d_laws approved!). Its sole flaw is being unable to make dice rolling sounds.

Otherwise, it does a really good job as a dice roller.

Facebook is my main app. I really like the photo manipulation you can do with Camera Bag, and Field Runners is my favourite game on the machine.

Stanza is nice for carrying public domain books around.

Beejive is an excellent multi-system IM client. I'm finding it worth every penny.

Apple's HoldEm poker ap is a lot of fun.

Yelp for the iPhone comes in handy, and I use AroundMe even more to find stuff that's, well, around me, like an ATM or coffee shop or whatever.

Ivory Tiles is a fun game done by some friends of mine.

I've found that I prefer Fring, for multi-system IM and Skype purposes... and it's free.

Ha! I knew you'd get that!

My favorite apps:

What's On? (TV schedule app), Bloomberg Finance, Facebook, AIM mobile, Wordpress, Livejournal, Google Earth, Simplify Media, AP Mobile News, Tangram Pro (excellent time killer), The Constitution, Backgrounds, Shazam, Bejeweled...the list goes on. :)

I use eReader and Stanza a lot; now that Stanza's going to be offering eReader support, I may end up going with just the one.

The iPhone's built-in video and music playing are really very nice.

Toodledo has been improving my life on various fronts; it's a to-do app that syncs between desktop and mobile.

NetNewsWire is my RSS reader of choice.

Amazon Mobile and PhoneFlix are superior front ends for (respectively) Amazon and Netflix - each better in some ways, to my taste, than conventional web browsing for them. Google Mobile App is also very good.

Warcraft Characters is nice for gear-checking alts and the like; Warcraft Chest is good for loot list review.

Oblique Strategies is my favorite oracle.

I was (briefly) sorely tempted by the prospect of a 4 GB iPhone coming this winter to an Evil Big Box Discount Store Near You (or Me). Some reflection on the AT&T service charge and the need to rebuy some software I've already bought for my Palm, and the temptation passed.

They're all very pretty appliances. But I am doomed to remain 3 to 5 years behind the tech curve. Or more.

I'm loving the iPhone, although frankly more as an all-in-one gadget (media player, emailer, texting, 'net brower, etc.) than strictly as a phone. Plus we've got a family plan for our phones, which does cut the monthly fee down a bit on a per phone basis.
