It’s good, go see it.
I was dubious about the time-travel concept at first, but it proved to be an excellent in-genre way of setting up a reboot of the franchise. This new Star Trek is now clearly established as an alternate reality where the course of history has changed from the time of Kirk’s birth onward, retaining the essential elements of the setting, but altering the specific details any way the writers want.
The movie is definitely more in the space opera vein than some of Roddenberry’s more humanistic stuff; even Spock is around largely to point out how right Kirk is to follow his tendency for bold action. Thus the plot is relatively light, making the film fast-paced. It seems to flash by, especially once the action really starts.
The casting is pretty much pitch-perfect. Zachary Quinto is eerily good as Spock and Chris Pine does a good Kirk without going over the top into parody. I really like Karl Urban’s Dr. McCoy, although I wasn’t as crazy about Simon Pegg as Scotty (used a bit too much for comic relief). There are some nice moments of homage to the original series without being maudlin or fawning. The graphics and design are impressive: high tech but also utilitarian, the backdrops of San Francisco and Vulcan are particularly cool.
All-in-all, it’s a fun movie and I think a good relaunch of the franchise, assuming it’s a financial success and Paramount intends to do something further.
