"[President Bush's] position is that he thinks people ought to have the freedom to lead their private lives," White House spokesman Tony Snow said. "He also does not believe that that means that you have to redefine the institution of marriage. He believes the institution of marriage is between a man and a woman."
Apparently "freedom to lead their private lives" means "in the closet and out of the sight of decent, God-fearing folk, as it was meant to be." Our heroic President, riding to the rescue of marraige to protect it from having perverts "redefine" it, which is, of course, in no way a midterm election-year campaign stunt to shore up the President's flagging approval ratings with his bigotted extreme right-wing supporters and mobilize them to keep the Republicans in power.
Because, as we all know, my having the legal right to share property, visit my partner in the hospital, make critical medical decisions, file taxes jointly, and in general share our lives in all the numerous legal ways that straight married couples take for granted as their God-given right, is a very serious issue, a greater threat to our nation than war, global pandemic, a struggling economy, terrorism, or the arrival of hurricane season.
President Bush can kiss my queer ass. I'm sick and tired of being his target of opportunity.
