I was on a plane yesterday, so I missed marking a particular occasion.

A favorite story of mine came from a colleague in the RPG industry, who was at a convention when a younger male gamer asked him: "Have you heard about Steve Kenson?"

Fearing some accident had befallen me or the like, he quickly asked, "No, what?"

The young man leaned in and, in a conspiratorial whisper said, "He's gay." To which my colleague responded, "What?" (being fully aware of this, as is anyone who knows me at all).

"He's gay," the young man repeated, as if he hadn't made it clear the first time, as if my friend didn't understand the import of the information being passed along.

"Dude, I grew up in the San Francisco Bay," said my colleague, by way of explaining his lack of shock. "My last girlfriend was bisexual."

"Wow, what was that like?" The suddenly interested gamer dude asked.

So, in case you haven't had a rumor-obsessed and sexually deprived con-goer to explain it to you: a belated National Coming Out Day. I'm gay.

I'm shocked

Don't tell anyone...but he's Pagan too. No really, he is. I mean the whole witch thing and everything.

But don't tell anyone.

Congratulations Steve!

Being Gay is Okay!

It certainly explains many of my questions about Blue Rose :)

I never would have guessed. ;)
Hmm. I didn't "come out" on my journal (being bi), but I'm pretty lazy about the whole thing. :)

Generally, so am I but I've been feeling more of an activist streak lately (gee, wonder why?)

Of course!

What better research material than personal experience :)

All kidding aside, I thought that Blue Rose was innovative in the way it dealt with sexuality.

Just reminds me of Origins 2001, when I was walking behind two gamers in the exhibit hall (who fit the basic stereotype of a gamer that we all hate to a 'T' - unbathed, overweight and quite gross) only to overhear the one loudly proclaim to the other, "Is everyone in this freaking convention gay?"

I wanted to say to them, "Yes, gay people are gamers too and some of them even work in the industry as publishers and designers." I couldn't help but think that every girl they talked to probably told them that just to get them away from them quickly. But I figured telling them this would either come across as a foreign language or they would raise crucifixes and hiss at me.

I know, I know, it's a shocking and world-altering event when people hear that. ;)

I considered coming out of the closet, but then I realized I'd have to clean it sufficiently to get into it first, much less getting out of it again... and then I went to get a sandwich. :) Take that for what you will.

I'll have to add Gaming to my list of things that cause homosexuality.

distant father
smothering mother
Tai Chi
Mushrooms
Meat from uncurcumsized pigs
Fear of vaginal teeth
Androgynous Rock stars (Christopher???)
Demonic possession

Actually I have heard all of these as explanations.
:D

I think a good comeback would be...

Yeah, I've heard similar stories from a few people. It's funny how every Joe Random Gamer seems to treat it like he's stumbled upon a Big Secret or something.

I've had/heard similar conversations in the past, and the best response I can ever come up with is a blank look and "So?". I'm from backwoods New Hampshire, and even I think it's about as interesting as talking about paint drying.
